Dont Let Summer in Perth Sabotage Your Weight Loss Goals

December 29th, 2009 in Fat Loss by admin

Summertime in Perth can be a sneaky season and if you’re not careful it can sabotage your weight loss goals.

While long hot days at Scarborough beach, Cottesloe or maybe even a BBQ while watching the sunset at City Beach may be your idea of a perfect summer’s day in Perth, there are a couple of things you may want to be prepared for if you are aiming to drop a little weight this summer.

It may be the best time of year for having family or friends over for dinner around the barbie but piling your plate high with potato salad  can come close to meeting your daily calorie needs in one sitting.  You see your body can only handle so many calories at one time, anything above this and the body stores it as fat no matter what your daily intake is. So remember quality over quantity and spread your food out over your plate, never heap it up.

Firing up the BBQ and cracking a cold beer seems to be a summer tradition in Perth but did you know an average full strength beer has 135 calories.  3-4 of those beers and you can be consuming the liquid equivalent of a quarter pounder from McDonalds before you even chow down on that 866 calorie steak and snaggas!  Thats a total of 1406 calories in one meal!  Your body cannot use up that amount of food when consumed in one sitting.  So lets say, your body can use the first 700 calories thats still a whopping 706 calories getting stored as fat.  Plus alcohol suppresses fat oxidation{alclnk}  Instead choose low calorie beverages and eliminate eating too much meat in one sitting.

The hot weather in Perth also means we start reaching for the soft drinks more in the summer.  Did you know there can be up to 10 teaspoons of sugar in just one can!?!  3 cans of soft drink in one day and you have consumed the same amount of sugar in 15 Cinnamon Donuts!   Instead try diet or no sugar drinks, switch to water or space every second drink with a glass of water.

There are two other common ways that summertime impacts on our workout habits, that don’t relate to diet;

1. I’m sure you have used this excuse before… “Its too hot to exercise”

Using the heat as an excuse not to exercise may seem a reasonable compromise but those hot days can soon add up to a few weeks.  Be prepared to workout indoors or in air conditioning or earlier in the day to escape the dreaded Perth heat in our hottest months.  You may even prefer to switch to another physical activity during the summer months such as swimming, kayaking, water polo or surfing.  Perth has an abundance of water sport opportunities and you’ll look forward to getting your exercise in if it also means you’ll be escaping the heat.

.

2. Have you heard that lack of sleep makes you fat?

With longer days and more socializing in the evenings, the Perth summer means we tend to get less sleep.  And recent studies have found that getting less than 5hrs of sleep means you are 32% more likely to experience major weight gain and 15% more likely to become obese.   So if you want to lose weight, you should make sure that you are sleeping 7 hours or more a night in addition to following a healthy diet and exercise program.
